Winter clothing is absolutely indispensable in polar and cold regions, but one problem that might arise is that we may begin losing warmth due to the evaporation of water contained in our clothes thanks to a soaking rain, snow and sweat.

This water absorbs the energy trapped in the air spaces within the your cloths, which act as insulation, protecting your body, and so, all your metabolic energy is spent, literally, drying up what you wear. These air spaces are essential to provide insulation; pullovers are great at this because of the spaces left between the stitches.

Wearing a poncho or a rainproof garment almost immediately increases the warming power of your clothes because those garments take the radiating effect of the wind over your clothes' surface. Wind acts over your soaked clothes much like intake air does over a car's radiator while it is running. It dissipates energy; in extreme cases, this could mean frostbite or hypotermia for you.

Thus, rainproof garments of this kind will always be helpful, but you will still need to dry your clothes if they are moist. If you keep them on, you will be the stove; the morals: at least change your underwear, if you can.

Under all sorts of rainproof and waterproof gear you should wear clothes that are water repellent or resistant, or at least, that will keep you relatively warm even if they absorb water. Wool is great for that; curiously enough, not even modern, hi-tech fibres can surpass the insulation power of common wool, so always carry a pullover with you. This may prove crucial if you confront an emergency or survival situation during any outdoor activity or excursion.
