Within the context of survival situations you cannot see things in any other way apart from pure realism; some people love guns while others hate them and movie characters like Rambo and gung-ho paramilitary types - not to mention purebreed terrorists - have done little to diminish the fear that the public has in relation to guns.
But having a gun during an emergency or catastrophe of any sort may prove to be a lifesaver insurance policy; this does not mean that you should keep your basement full of Armalites and Kalashnikovs. If you love guns then keep them because of that, without any need to develop a patch of rational survivalism pretensions. But if you don't like guns or fear them, think twice: a handgun may save your life specifically whithin the context of a survival situation.
This being said, not all weapons and firearms are created equal, and some may be good for a survival situations, while others won't: a FAL, AK-47 or AR-15 will not be good for survival. These are combat weapons intended for major warfare; survivors don't need to get into trouble, but away from it. If you plan to go to war, then it is your decision, but don't say that you are training for survival.
In wilderness or urban survival scenarios, simple, reliable and easily transportable weapons are preferable. You don't need the firepower to penetrate armour plates, but to defend yourself, make signals and perhaps, hunt. Short barreled shotguns, pistols and revolvers are best suited for these jobs.
But sawed-off barrels are illegal in many jurisdictions, so unless you have some design like what came out of the , your choice will be limited to either pistols or revolvers. These are different guns that have their advantages and disadvantages.
Some gun buffs prefer pistols, while others will choose revolvers; however, for practical survival purposes a revolver has an edge over a pistol because it is generally safer, even in the hands of a novice, it is generally more robust, requires less maintenance and is more versatile because you can load it with more variants of ammunition.
And regarding ammo, the best choice would be a .38; indeed, there are more powerful designs but shooting a .44 Magnum is not for everyone and under survival circumstances it may be the case that your family will have to use your gun too.
