VFR flying is very nice and probably the choice for airborne explorers. You will rarely use instrument flying rules in order to explore visually a chunk of landscape with your eyes! And as you do so, the time will come when you will have to land somewhere, probably in some grass strip hidden in the middle of a forest, or lying on top of a greenish field, making it very difficult to be seen, especially if the runway sports no markings.
I just love to do that with a Piper Cub capable of landing on the palm of your hand, but instead of navigating my way just with a chart and a compass - good for training but of little practical value if you want to reach your destination safely and efficiently -, I use a handheld GPS that I place on top of the flying machine's panel, like a lot of aviators.
Using a GPS receiver for navigational purposes is very good, but you should also observe some precautions when planning to use one of those to actually locate a hard-to-see landing strip. You will be able to read some tips in this regard .
