de Bonchamps, Christian - The Marquis Christian de Bonchamps (1860-1919) was a French military officer, colonial bureaucrat and explorer of Africa. He was one of the leaders of the Grant Stairs expedition against King Msiri and who was left in charge of the whole venture once about half of its participants perished or became incapacitated. Later on his life, he took part in the 'Fashoda incident,' but for the most part, his entire life remains surrounded in mystery.
