Beecroft, John - John Beecroft (1790-1854), born in England, was a soldier during the Napoleonic wars and later consul and acting governor of the island of Fernando Po before it was ceded to Spain. He directed several expeditions thorough the river Niger and in Benin. He died while organising an expedition, and was replaced by Balfour Blake.
