Long Cecil - During the Boer war in South Africa, the Kimberley mining installations suffered the siege of guerilla fighters. Then, the De Beers mining company entered the business of weapons productions just for the occasion and the engineers that worked at the mines there came with the design of a cannon, complete with tailor-made ammunition, that they used to respond the fire coming from the surrounding Boers. The gun was christened 'Long Cecil' to remember Cecil Rhodes, the founder of the de Beers company, and while the cannon wasn't enough to break the siege, the very fact that it entered actual combat action proved to be of significant psychological importance for the defenders.
