Burton, Richard Francis - Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) was a British explorer that was famous for his vast linguistic knowledge as well as the expeditions in which he took part in Asia and Africa. He was one of the few Christians ever to set foot in Mecca, having travelled in disguise, and an explorer of the sources of the river Nile. He discovered for Europeans Lake Tanganyika, was an ardent, outspoken opponent of colonial rule and the author of numerous books.
