ABARE GM Crops Report Faulty
Greenpeace challenges ABARE to include the real costs of growing genetically engineered (GE) crops – and is highly critical of the claim that Australia's regional economy would benefit by billions of dollars from GE crops.
“ABARE has released yet another report that fails to take into account international market rejection of GE crops, and the full costs of segregation and testing,” said Greenpeace genetic engineering campaigner Rebecca Hubbard.
Either ABARE researchers can't do a simple university level economic review or they are being directed to produce reports that promote biotechnology to a resisting population.
It’s hard to see how there can be an economic advantage to Australian farmers when the report is based on an analysis of 5 GE crops which have all been rejected by European markets.
ABARE assumes that all Australian farmers would take up GE crops. But an analysis by canola growers themselves found that they would be $143million worse off if planting of GE canola became widespread in Australia. Most Australian canola farmers won't go near GE canola due to international experience with herbicide resistance, increased seed costs and contamination problems.
