A brief comment on a gang transformed into a baseball team.
At the end of the nineteenth century New York was a place of rampant poverty and crime and among all criminals there was a gang called "The Midnight Terrors" that did what its name graphically says. They vandalised, robbed, mobbed and mugged, and as many poor and ignorant people that suddenly acquires money, they jumped on every new trend and vogue.
So when baseball began attracting lots of attention, they also jumped into the game and formed their own team, with their own gang's name. To get the necessary gear and mean they naturally robbed and mobbed a little more, and when they hit the fields, they did exactly the same thing in order to win, no matter what. They used knifes, needles, nails, their fists or whatever they could smuggle into the stadiums, and soon discovered that their "fans" could do some additional business with the rest of the spectators, as the team played.
But people and the authorities finally got fed up with all that and the team that bet their existence and success on mobbing others finally lost.
