Playing is part of life and betting is a part of the play, of gaming and entertaining oneself; betting doesn't take the form of money every time for various reasons, and so exotic bets appear here and there, particularly among adventurers and people exposed to difficult situations. For some reasons we humans need to play, and so do other animals; but we often also need to put at stake something as part of our games or play rules, be it money, our own life or whatever else might be of value, like food under certain circumstances, clothes, etc. In this section of our site we will comment a little on those exotic bets that are related to our main topic of study. That is, adventure and exploration. You may not like betting at all, or may love it; but regardless of your viewpoints on betting and the fact that there is a psychological definition for compulsive gambling - ludopathy - this is something that deserves some thoughts. Done in a healthy and responsible way, playing, betting and even gambling can be very satisfying and healthy, not ton mention lucrative. However, our goal here is not to give praise to gambling but to point out the utility of playing games of any sort under survival situations or emergencies, when survivors need to distract their minds a little bit in order to stay sane. Under such circumstances - like people left stranded on a desert island - mind games, card games or anything that could be invented may even save lives, and since betting adds to the interest of the activity, it should be seen then and there as a necessity instead of a morally questionable idea. Thus, under such difficult circumstances even gambling - provided that it doesn't lead to cabin-fever quarrels - should be considered as a valid tool for keeping survivors relatively comfortable and healthy. In these cases, since money may lose its value altogether people tend to bet on other things and thus, bizarre and exotic bets begin to germinate.
