There are only few occasions in which someone can lose really, big time; that is, to have literally an empire wash away in just one day.
The vast, complex and powerful Hittite empire once rose on what is now Turkey, but after centuries of presence and development, it vanished overnight, in just one single day, around the year 1.200 B.C. during the reign of its last king, Shuppiluliuma II.
Almost nothing was left of its capital, its palaces, fortifications and houses. It is known that there was a large fire, and that soon afterwards, very small and feeble kingdoms of Hittite origin emerged in the area, breathed for one or two centuries and gave up the ghost, taking their whole and refined culture away from this world.
There are no historical records about this mother of all disappearances, not even in the royal annals of neighbouring and enemy nations like Babylonia. Nothing is known about the causes of the catastrophe or what happened to its willing or unwilling actors.
This is really to lose, even vanishing from memories. Who knows what was the strange bet that the king lost on that day of days?
