A widely known, household Jewish family name.

"Who refuses to do arithmetic is doomed to talk nonsense." - Unknown.

Weinberg is a very popular family name and there is no guarantee that all people bearing it are related - that is, it is not likely that all Weinbergs are in fact part of the same family. Those that are related to the rabbinical Weinbergs probably are, as well as those related to other rabbinical families, but this cannot be said for certain in all cases.

Weinberg is often mixed up with Bamberg, which is yet another well-known family name. However, while in some cases one might be a variant of the other this does not happen in all cases: Weinberg and Bamberg do sound similar but are completely different words that refer to different things. Jewish surnames were often assigned by public officials by means of recombination of some root words like berg, blat, gold, and so on and therefore family names like Goldberg, Goldblat and so on. In some cases, families became associated with their places of origin. Weinberg and Bambberg do not relate to one another based on these arguments.

Of course, aside from bearing similar-sounding families, there were individuals from the Bamberg family that married with people from the Weinberg family and thus both names became attached and conceivably, confused at some point but again, these two names mean different things and have different origins.

Weissberg is another similarly-sounding name that in reality is not a derivative of Weinberg but a different family name altogether. There have been even marriages between Weinbergs and Weissbergs, showing that the names have different origins.
