"The invaders did not especially appreciate people like that. Stalin had just exterminated his own during his recent party and government cleansing, and certainly he did not want others of the same kind from his recently conquered lands.

There where Divisions of the Red Army where - for example - no officers were left, and Sergeants and Corporals had to command them for a while.

In essence, the soviet agents were after anyone who could possibly become a menace to Stalin, and my Grandfather was like a sitting duck according to their logic.

Nobody was able to fetch him back from the Soviets who at that time were also looting the country. The officious soviet bureaucrats and military officers would not do anything or simply could not because their own necks were at stake.

My Grandmother moved his family to territory occupied by the Germans. She had a house in Novy Dwur, near Warsaw, and preferred the Germans to the Soviets, even despite the fact that she was Jewish.

My Grandmother spoke very good German, and hoped to pass unnoticed by the SS. She thought that being the wife of a “Spion”, she and her children would certainly follow the fate my Grandfather at the hands of the Soviet occupation forces.

With the Germans she stood at least a chance by hiding, because they did not know her real identity."
