"You will only survive an ambush if you counter attack immediately and frontally. You cannot wait for support to come, neither you should expect your enemy to vanish suddenly.

Your opponents will have almost surely designed their firing areas so as to destroy your unit, so they will never retreat unless forced to, and by the moment your support arrives, they might do so, but it might also be too late for your unit.

A frontal counter attack will certainly be costly, but less than if you stay there as a sitting duck.

The British have used this tactic in Malaysia, using the combined firepower of shotguns as well as their SLR assault rifles, and it worked very well."
